Intelligent heat pump control: Simple, efficient, and future-proof
The energy transition is progressing—and with it, the need for intelligent solutions to efficiently utilize renewable energy is growing. A prime example of this is the new, cloud-based control system for heat pumps, developed in close cooperation with leading heat pump manufacturers. Smart control reduces operating costs without sacrificing comfort.
Stronger together: Heat pump technology meets HEMS expertise
Through this close cooperation, two worlds have been combined: in-depth expertise in heat pump technology and know-how in the intelligent management of solar power and dynamic tariffs. The result is one of the fastest and most user-friendly energy management solutions on the market—ideal for anyone looking to operate their heat pump cost-effectively.
Quick setup – maximum impact
Commissioning is remarkably simple: A connection between the heat pump and the energy manager is established via highly secure cloud connections. After adding the heat pump in the app, you only need to enter the power consumption during heating operation. For many modern, modulating heat pumps in residential homes, a reference value of 2,000 watts is already sufficient.
Transparency through direct connection
Thanks to the direct cloud connection, important operating data such as compressor temperature, current status, and power consumption are transmitted in real time and displayed in the app. The energy manager uses these parameters to send precise control commands.
Gentle performance adjustment instead of hard switching
A special feature of our control system is its gentle handling of the equipment. The system does not simply switch the heat pump on and off. Instead, the control system uses intelligent signals to shift the heat pump into a higher operating state (boost mode) when needed.
This means the heat pump continues to run in a modulating and stable manner, but specifically raises its target temperatures to utilize, for example, the hot water tank or the heating buffer as a thermal battery, as long as free PV surplus or low-cost grid power is available.
Two-stage protection for maximum longevity
To protect the mechanics of the heat pump—especially the compressor—from unnecessary wear during changing weather conditions, two safety mechanisms work in tandem:
- The 30-minute delay: Our external control system is intentionally designed to react slowly to short-term weather changes. The command to increase performance is only issued once a PV surplus or a price signal has been stable for at least approx. 30 minutes. This prevents the heat pump from unnecessarily changing its operating state every time a cloud passes by.
- Internal heat pump hysteresis: In addition to the external delay, every heat pump has its own internal logic, known as hysteresis. This ensures that the device only reacts when defined thresholds are reached and adheres to internal safety intervals (e.g., minimum run times).
Intelligent control with consideration for technology and efficiency
Our AI-based algorithms provide a recommendation to the heat pump to increase performance during periods of PV surplus or low electricity prices. However, the final decision is made by the device itself—a decisive advantage:
- Economic efficiency: The heat pump only runs at increased power when it makes sense energetically and financially—ensuring maximum efficiency at all times.
- Safety: All protective functions and switch-on limitations remain active—the manufacturer's warranty is always preserved.
- Longevity: Operation is extremely gentle due to the combination of performance adjustment (instead of on/off) and time delays. This protects both the environment and your wallet.
Conclusion
This innovative solution demonstrates how modern technology and smart control can go hand in hand. It not only enables more efficient use of solar power and dynamic tariffs but also ensures safe and long-lasting operation of the heat pump through gentle control of operating states—a real win for the environment, your wallet, and the technology itself.
